Herman Barkema is an internationally recognized epidemiologist whose work spans animal and human health. The primary goal of his research is to ensure a safe and sustainable food supply through control of infectious diseases in cattle. He is Professor of Epidemiology in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, a Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine, and a United Nations University Chair in Infectious Diseases in a Changing Climate, with a joint appointment in the Dept. of Community Health Sciences of the Cumming School of Medicine. He has led several national and international research initiatives. Currently, he leads the Alberta Antimicrobial Resistance - One Health Consortium and Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Network (CAN-AMR-Net) and is an international leader in infectious disease research in cattle, AMR and One Health.
